On April 26th, 2018, there is going to be World Intellectual Property Day and Kamil Idris would like people to know about it.
Who is Kamil Idris? He is Sudanese and has been a statesman, scholar, and international civil servant. His prominent position was being the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organizations (WIPO) and had this position from November of 1997 to 2008 of September. Another position that he had was the head person of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants.
Kamil Idris thinks that the average women or man might wonder why there is such a big deal about an international property. Why should they worry about patents, industrial designs, copyrights or trademarks? There are much bigger issues that could affect them like climate change, war or property. They also might be more interested in surviving day to day than whether Marvel Studios actually owns the rights to Spider-Man or nor.
According to Kamil Idris, World Intellectual Property Day is not just focusing on intellectual property. He feels that it is about celebrating the huge power that creativity has. Without copyright protection, why would do anything creative? A person would always be worried that the piece of art that he spends days working on would be taking away from him or her. He or she would not be able to get the money that he has the right to earn from that work of art. Creativity needs to be protected or it will not flourish. Kamil Idris writes for Fordham University on this issue.
As said above, Kamil Idris used to be the head of WIPO and he believes that his old organization should be committed to spreading and harnessing the power that human creativity has. Everybody must be able to share in human creative power and intellectual property rights is able to protect that power.
In Kamil Idris’s eyes, World Intellectual Property Day is an important day and everybody should take time to celebrate it.
