For those of you who are not aware, Sheriff Joe Arpaio is everything that is wrong with this nation. The Arizona sheriff rose to fame when he set up tent prison in the Arizona desert and forced prisoners to wear ladies underwear among other humiliations.
The sheriff’s practices have been controversial if not criminal. In 2007 journalists Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin printed some material about the Sheriff and his activities.
As a result of the backlash received, the two journalists were arrested on misdemeanor charges in the middle of the night. After a lengthy court battle, the journalists were awarded a settlement over what was ultimately a false arrest.
In a recent article for News Version, it was reported that Sheriff Joe had received a presidential pardon for his atrocities and is now a clean man in the eyes of the office of the president.
The article goes on to suggest that the pardon was purchased with endorsements, for now, President Donald J Trump. Trump is a true Republican and so is Sheriff Joe. These men seek to keep the old white boys club in full swing and have no regard for anyone person who doesn’t see the world there way. Read more: Michael Lacey | LinkedIn and Jim Larkin | Twitter
Joe is the kind of man that sees only justice and never reform. He treated prisoners as if they were human garbage and what is worse is that we as a nation allowed him to get away with it for so long. We need to stand up to Joe and Trump and anyone else that thinks it is acceptable to treat American citizens like dirt. The article goes on to discuss the long-standing abuse suffered by the Latino community in the sheriff’s jurisdiction and the impact that his legacy has had on the region to be a negative one.
Many in the Latino community are living in constant fear of the police, even after Sheriff Joe was knocked from his position as Sheriff. Thankfully the people of his town had enough sense not to re-elect him, and Arizona is all the better for a much-needed sea change.
After Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin won their court battle against Sherrif Joe, they used the settlement money to set up charities with an emphasis on helping the Latino community in their town and surrounding areas to fight back against poverty and injustice.
People like Sherrif Joe should never allowed position’s of power for the sake of the community as a whole. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin, continue to make sure Sheriff Joe is held to account for his actions and are saddened by his Presidental pardon.
