Nathaniel Ru and his two friends Jonathan Neman and Nicolas Jammet were classmates at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. Although the three friends loved eating healthy meals, they had a problem identifying healthy eating joints in town. Other than the joints being healthy, the three also wanted their eat outs to be fun and easy.
The three friends wondered if the answer they were looking for was in a 560-square tavern that they identified on M- Street. They wanted to start an eating joint that would be fun, easy, and healthy.
Their determination paid off as six years later the eatery they started has become the restaurant chain Sweetgreen that has spread in several locations. While describing the process of attaining the apartment, Nathaniel Ru said that the landlord of the tavern turned out to be the landlord of the flat of the building around where Ru and two friends lived.
Nathaniel called her and explained their plans on the tavern. The landlord hung up the phone, and the three continued calling her daily for three months. Finally, she agreed to meet them face to face. Nathaniel explains that this was the only day he wore a suit to a meeting. They had prepared only three pages of a business plan and had decided to call the place greens. Although Nathaniel, Jonathan, and Nicolas were one semester from clearing college, they must have convinced the landlord they would make it as she told them to look for investors, architect and a real business plan.
Within three weeks, the three found investors and architect and also drew out a more detailed plan. Looking back, Nathaniel says that they must have been so lucky for the landlord to give them a chance despite the fact that they had no previous experience. The venture has now expanded to sections such as New York, Washington, and Philadelphia.
Customers say that they love the outlet because the founders thought about the why before they thought about the what. The company also stands out because it challenges the norm.
