It would seem to be a pretty straightforward thing to propose, no one who has committed a hate crime should be allowed to have a gun in the United States. Even so, there are some who are sure to defend the rights of those who want to have a gun despite their past.
Newsweek has written an article about how two Democratic lawmakers have once again proposed this bill on the floor of the House of Representatives. In most states, those who have committed certain types of hate crimes are able to purchase a gun legally. There is also the trouble that hate crime is defined differently from one state to the next.
The laws are just too murky on this very important issue for the likings of these Democratic lawmakers and many who support them. As such, they would like to see some of those loopholes closed by making new laws that make it very clear that those who commit these terrible crimes will not be permitted to have guns in this country. It is just too dangerous of a situation to allow someone who is like that to still carry around a gun. For many people, this is just plain common sense, but there are some who are still fighting the fight to resist against such things.
Democrats are in the minority in both chambers of Congress and do not have any power in the White House. Therefore, this bill is probably dead on arrival before it gets anywhere close to a full vote in the House. That being said, it is a good idea to keep these types of issues on the minds of the country. At the very least this will mean that it is something that people will be talking about and keeping alive.
The gun laws may take a while to change, but at the very least we can see that some lawmakers are thinking about them very carefully and want to make good proposals.
