The Senate Committee’s report on how CIA officials used to torture prisoners during the Bush era has evoked wide spread reactions around the globe. Vijay Eswaran was horrified by it. While the news hardly comes as a shock, people are still surprised over the extent to which unlawful interrogation techniques were used by the officials. Following its release, it has been met with very much controversy.
The biggest surprise, perhaps, is the way in which the report managed to exonerate all top leaders from the government including former President Bush himself. According to sources, it has been revealed that the President, his top officials and the members of the Congress were unaware of the brutal torture techniques used at least until late 2006.
It is really hard to believe that the President nor any of his top aides were completely oblivious to the measures enforced by the CIA. In many aspects the report can be deemed as a failure since the political class has emerged unscathed.
Post 9/11, the Bush administration rewrote laws which made it easy for authorities to use underhand methods while interrogating prisoners. Among the prisoners held, at least 1/5th of them were unjustly detained.
