Top Democratic Party Donor Wants Lawmakers to Start Trump Impeachment Proceedings

A top donor to the Democratic Party wants lawmakers to start impeachment proceedings for Donald Trump. Tom Steyer, an environmentalist and a super PAC funder, drafted a letter spelling out the reason for impeaching Trump. Steyer’s letter states that Trump obstructed justice by impeding the FBI’s efforts to investigate Russia’s interference with the U.S. presidential election in 2016.

According to Steyer, there are clear and undisputed facts that exceed the current standards for impeaching the President of the United States. The letter was a plea to Republican lawmakers by the liberal Democrat, and many political pundits believe the letter will fall by the wayside. According to some members of the Democratic Party, most of the talk surrounding impeaching Trump comes from the far corners of the party.

According to The Huffington Post, most liberal Democrats avoid impeachment talks so they do not offend voters, especially independent voters who are on the fence about Donald Trump. Some top Democrats would rather talk about the Republicans efforts to reform healthcare and replace Obamacare, according to party insiders.

Steyer believes that Trump obstructed justice by asking then FBI Director James Comey to “let go of” the investigation into former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn’s contacts with representatives from Russia during the presidential campaign. In his letter to Republicans, Steyer states that Trump’s actions exceeded those of then-President Bill Clinton’s actions back in 1998, when the House of Representatives impeached President Clinton for obstruction of justice in the Monica Lewinsky investigation.

Former FBI Director James Comey testified earlier in the week before the Senate Intelligence Committee regarding private meetings and conversations he had with Donald Trump. According to Comey, Trump asked the former director for loyalty and asked if he could let go of the investigation into Flynn.
